CANTERBURY Poor Law Union and Workhouse
The parishes within the city form a Union for the
relief of the poor, but the city of Canterbury, although under the jurisdiction
of the Poor Law Commissioners, is exempt from the provisions of the New Poor Law
Act as regard the election of its guardians, who are returned by a majority of
the rate payers, & not by the property qualification. John Pringeur, master.
