Basford Union

Following the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 Basford Union was declared 13th April 1836

The Union comprised the parishes of Annesley, Arnold, Awsworth, Barton-in-Fabis, Beeston, Bestwood Park, Bilborough, Bradmore, Bridgford, Brinsley, Bunny, Burton Joyce, Calverton, Carlton, Clifton-with-Glapton, Codnor, Codnor Park, Colwick, Cossall, Eastwood, Felley, Gamston, Gedling, Gotham, Greasley, Heanor, Hucknall Torkard, Ilkeston, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Lambley, Linby, Newstead Priory, Nuthall, Papplewick, Ruddington, Selston, Shipley, Stoke Bardolph, Strelley, Thrumpton, Trowell, Wilford, Wollaton and Woodborough.

The Board of Guardians met every alternate Tuesday at 11am at the Workhouse.

The population of the Union in 1891 was 154,387 and rateable value in 1899 546,019.

The workhouse in Basford, a building of stone and brick was built in 1836. It was enlarged and a hospital added in 1872, and could accommodate 409 inmates.

The Workhouse developed following the National Health Service to become Highbury Hospital.
